Hong Kong Stocks Tumble on Trump Comments

Hong Kong shares tumbled on Wednesday after Donald Trump threw a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in doubt and hit out at a China-US agreement that averted a trade war.

The Hang Seng Index sank 1.82 percent, or 568.71 points, to 30,665.64.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.41 percent, or 45.39 points, to 3,168.96 and the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, gave up 1.10 percent, or 20.44 points, to 1,834.72.

Hong Kong Stocks Retreat in First Few Minutes

Hong Kong stocks eased in the opening exchanges on Wednesday as investors returned from a one-day break to concerns about the historic US-North Korean summit.

The Hang Seng Index dipped 0.14 percent, or 42.48 points, to 31,191.87.

And the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.28 percent, or 8.91 points, to 3,205.44, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, eased 0.20 percent, or 3.80 points, to 1,851.36.

Hong Kong, China Stocks Rise After China-US Agreement (Review)

Hong Kong and mainland stocks kicked the week off with healthy gains on Monday after the United States and China agreed to drop planned tariffs and pull back from the brink of a trade war.

The Hang Seng Index rose 0.60 percent, or 186.44 points, to 31,234.35.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index jumped 0.64 percent, or 20.54 points, to 3213.84 and the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, rose 1.05 percent, or 19.27 points, to 1848.06.
