China Blue-Chips Gain on Trade Talk Plan; Shanghai Lower

China’s blue-chip index closed higher on Friday, following its peers in the region, on prospects of a new round of trade talks between China and the U.S., but mixed economic data weighed on the Shanghai Composite index.

The Shanghai Composite index ended down 0.2 percent at 2,681.64 points. The index is down 0.8 percent for the week, its third consecutive weekly fall. The blue-chip CSI300 index gained 0.2 percent to 3,242.09 points at close on Friday, but was down 1.1 percent for the week.

China’s growth looks set to cool further in coming months, with a barrage of August economic data doing little to dispel views that domestic demand is softening and government support measures will take some time to kick in.

China blue-chips hit 13-month low as trade fears

China stocks extended a bruising sell-off on Wednesday, with blue chips slumping to their worst loss in over a year on growing concerns about the economic outlook amid a bitter trade dispute with the United States and a faltering yuan.

Investors worried a depreciating yuan could trigger capital outflows in a blow to asset prices and push up costs for domestic airlines with dollar-denominated debts.

The blue-chip CSI300 index fell 2.1 percent, to 3,459.26 points, the lowest level since last May, while the Shanghai Composite Index plumbed a fresh two-year low before closing down 1.1 percent at 2,813.18 points.

China’s blue-chip index ended higher on Monday, helped by robust gains in consumer and healthcare firms, and on signs the United States and North Korea were still working towards holding a summit.

The blue-chip CSI300 index closed up 0.4 percent at 3,833.26, while the Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.2 percent to 3,135.08 points.

Sector performance was mixed on Monday. Gains were led by consumer and healthcare firms, with indexes tracking them ending up 3.3 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday a U.S. team had arrived in North Korea to prepare for a proposed summit between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which Trump pulled out of last week before reconsidering.
